PEOPLE WE OUGHT TO CLONE

Add Alex Ristuben, a senior at Gig Harbor High School, to the list. For his senior project, he raised $2,400 that he'll donate to the Ronald McDonald House in the form of video games, DVDs, CDs, gift cards and other items. Tonight he'll host a movie night at a newly opened teen room at the Ronald McDonald House, a home-away-from- home for the families of seriously ill children being treated at Children's Hospital. Designed as a place for teens to hang out away from younger children, its amenities include a pool table, video game systems, sound system and computer. Judy Adams, manager of volunteer services, says teenage volunteers "give teens who live here someone to talk to. They bring a lot of energy to the house and a hope of what (a teen being treated for serious illness) can get back to," she says. Volunteering provides perspective, she says, recalling the experience of one teen, then a high school junior hoping to play college basketball. An injury had sidelined her and forced surgery. She was understandably upset. One day last spring the teen was helping with a craft project. "What happened to your leg?" an 11-year-old girl, bald-headed from cancer treatment, asked. The teen explained how crushed she was not to be able to practice.
"Oh my God. That is such a bummer," the little girl responded. Sudden understanding flashed across the teen's face, Adams says. "She learned so much that day."

TEEN DONATES TO RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES

Alex Ristuben, a senior at Gig Harbor High School, knows it’s tough enough to be a teen without being sick and away from all your friends. That’s why he chose Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington & Alaska as the project for his Senior Exhibition. Since January, Alex has collected $2,000 to donate to the Seattle Ronald McDonald House in the form of videos, movies, games, CDs, DVDs, teen magazines, gift cards and other items that teens staying at the House can enjoy. So far, he’s purchased 80 movies (rated G, PG and PG-13), 20 video games including Wii games and the new Xbox Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution, plus DVDs and CDs.
Alex will host a teen movie night at the Seattle Ronald McDonald House to present the items he’s collected to the House and meet the teens. Prior to the movie, Alex, his brothers and his parents Susie and Erik Ristuben will join the families staying at the House for a dinner at the House prepared by the University Rotary Club, who regularly cooks dinners for the families staying at the House as part of the RMHC Family Meal Program.
